Last night I went to stuff my face with another burger. Having tried a fair few in the recent months I thought my stomach would descend on the new and infamous Five Guys in Covent Garden.
Now, there’s been a fair bit of hype about this newby so I wanted to give it a fair test and true rating. Its got a similar idea as normal fast food restaurants where you order and then find a seat (this seems to be a new recurring theme at the moment… silly London). There isn’t much choice in terms of the menu; burger, cheese burger, bacon burger, bacon cheeseburger… not rocket science!
I went for the bacon burger with ALL the trimmings.. I sort of panicked at the till and just went for everything… with a side of fries and a beer.
When the man calls your number you jump up and get your meal delivered in a cute little brown paper bag – its like bingo but you paid for the prize!
There doesn’t seem like theres much seating space when you walk in but it goes really far back and theres plenty downstairs too. I recommend you wait upstairs for a seat though, as downstairs felt a bit like you were in Mc Donalds after a night out at 3am… brawling and begging for chips crawling along the floor… too far?
Once I had prised my burger away from the tin foil I was kinda disappointed and happy in one… it was very squashed and sloppy but in a good way… I know – complete mixed emotions. Taste wise I was was a party on my tongue – literally banging tunes! The bacon was nice ‘n’ crispy and the meat was really juicy and succulent. Almost too juicy though – I had grease/ sauce/ juice literally dripping from my hands…
A great bonus was that there is all you can eat monkey nuts (ahem… peanuts) all over the place which is quite an innovative new twist… I love peanuts so this was great for me – not ideal if you’re really allergic though!
Overall I thought it was quite expensive for what it was, but the burger itself was really good. The chips were amazing as they were super fluffy and the right amount of salt. Great place for a quick bite or catch up with a friend… probably not the best place to take your mum!
